Covid-19 Testing Now Available

What is the Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causes the associated coronavirus disease COVID-19. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. The virus that causes COVID-19 is infecting people and spreading easily from person to person. On March 11, 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak was characterized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO)

Symptoms:

  • Aches and pains
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea

Transmission:

  • Respiratory droplets
  • Person to person
  • Touching mouth or nose after touching contaminated objects

Collection Procedure:

Nasal or oropharyngeal (OP) swab collected using the Aptima® Multitest Swab, then placed immediately into the Aptima® Specimen Transport Medium (orange) tube and loaded onto the Panther instrument for testing.

Panther Methodology:

The Aptima SARS-CoV-2 assay is a nucleic acid amplification test intended for the qualitative detection of RNA from SARS-CoV-2 isolated and purified from nasopharyngeal (NP), nasal and oropharyngeal (OP) swab specimens. The Aptima SARS-CoV-2 Assay on the Panther and Panther Fusion system is intended for use by laboratory personnel specifically instructed and trained in the operation of the Panther and Panther Fusion system. The tests are for use on the automated Panther System under Emergency use Authorization (EUA).
